The large island of Mindanao has five main mountain systems, some of them formed by volcanic action. The eastern end of Mindanao is highly mountainous, including the Diuata Mountains, with several elevations above 6,000 feet (1,828 m), and the southeastern mountain ranges, which reach a high point of 9,200 feet (2,804 m). In the center of Mindanao there is a large mass of rugged mountain ranges, one of which divides the island from north to south. This mountain range contains 2954 m (9,692 ft) of Mount Apo, the highest peak in the country, overlooking the Gulf of Davao.
The extensive lowlands of Cotabato separate these highlands from a southwestern coastal mountain range. The mountain is famous for its multiple peaks, of which the three best known are Tarak Ridge, Pantingan (Banayan) and Mariveles Ridge. Mountain ranges divide island surfaces into narrow coastal strips and shallow inland plains or valleys. Even the mountaineers themselves will agree: Mount Kanla-on is the most beautiful mountain on this side of the planet.
Mount Pinatubo is considered one of the most loved hiking destinations for mountaineers for two reasons. A mountain range in the east, the Sierra Madre, runs so close to the eastern coast of the island that there are almost no coastal lowlands. The indigenous peoples of the mountain range, who have lived in the mountains for generations, are slowly being expelled or even eradicated. In addition, the sources of all the larger rivers that drain the island of Panay flow from the forested mountains of the mountain range, including the Panay, Jalaur, Aklan, Sibalom and Bugang rivers.
Mount Diwata (1,261 m or 4,137 feet above sea level), from which the name of the entire mountain range is derived, is full of legends; it is said to be the home of the diwatas, nymphs, fairies or goddesses of local tradition. Meanwhile, south of the Caraballo mountain range, the extensive Central Luzon plain extends into cities clustered around Manila Bay and beyond. Another notable peak in the Kitanglad mountain range is Mount Maagnaw, which, at 2,742 m (8,996 ft) above sea level, is the third highest point in the range and the eighth highest mountain in the Philippines. At the top of the mountain there are communication towers and several barracks equipped with electricity.
Another close candidate is Mount Mingan, the main and highest peak in the Mingan Mountains of the same name. There is a manifest dearth of information about the Piapyungan mountain range, perhaps the most inaccessible of all the mountain ranges in the Philippines; its wild forested slopes remain unexplored and unexplored. The forest also meets the needs of the indigenous tribes that have populated the mountain range for many centuries. While Pulag is not highly recommended for beginners, the mountain offers several trails to choose from.
